Leadership by coaching
By Vern Schmuland, Economic Development Manager

The work of a manager or leader is difficult, important and not well defined in many companies or businesses.  Yet this role is significant in contributing to the bottom line. The role can best be accomplished and meet the expectations of employees by being a coach.

To unlock a team’s true capabilities and to enhance the productivity and creativity, a manager or frontline leader should spend a high percentage of his/her time coaching the team. The team needs help in understanding the direction of a department or company and the expectations and implications for them as individuals and the team overall.

Employees respond well to coaching.  They feel their interests are of importance and what they do matters.

The contribution to the bottom line can be significant from the front line managers and employees, but for a company to obtain the gain it must redefine or define the roles and expectations with regular monitoring and feedback to support the managers.
